Building Regulations Sound Insulation Testing, Pre Completion Acoustic Testing of Separating Walls and Separating Floors


Blue Tree Acoustics are acoustic experts. We hold degrees in acoustics and are chartered engineers. Most sound insulation testers in the UK are not experts and hold no qualification. They can test a dwelling but have no knowledge of acoustics and cannot design or give advice.

Approved Document E to the Building Regulations requires that all new residential developments formed by either new build or by change of use must meet minimum standards of sound insulation.

Both separating walls and floors must meet a minimum standard.

Separating walls in new builds must meet 45dB DnT,w + Ctr

Separating floors in new builds must meet 45dB DnT,w + Ctr and 62dB L'nT,w

Separating walls in conversions must meet 43dB DnT,w + Ctr

Separating floors in conversions must meet 43dB DnT,w + Ctr and 64dB L'nT,w

Rooms for residential purpose such as hotels and student flats have a different set of criteria to meet.

Approved Document E requires that a sample of separating walls and/or floors in the development undergo pre-completion sound insulation testing. The results of these tests are reported in a formal report format together with an ANC certificate. The report should be forwarded to Building Control in order to demonstrate compliance with Building Regulations. We are ANC registered testers and can therefore produce ANC certificates for submission to Building Control.

Approved Document E requires a set of acoustic tests (often called noise tests or sound tests) for every ten dwellings of each separating wall and/or floor construction type.

A set of tests comprises two walls and two floors. This means that if your development has between two to ten dwellings and you have only one separating wall type and one separating floor type, you will need two walls and two floors testing.

Walls require an airborne test. Floors require both airborne and impact testing.
